I finally got to see the Princess & the Frog!! I know I know… people think I’m way too excited about this, but the resurrection of the original Disney Animation Studios is no small matter! Now my sister and I don’t have to write an irate letter demanding their return… :).
I admit; I was a cheater. I watched all the Behind the Scenes specials even before I watched the movie (not a move I recommend). I also read a number of reviews, including a certain sour one in the NYTimes. Yes, I agree that the racial undertones of segregated society are shown but not addressed. And yes, the movie may lack depth of character or complexity of personality. But seriously, who watches Disney for those reasons anyway?? All I know is I left the theatre with a warm, expanding feeling that lifted me a little higher than everyday life. And I couldn’t resist a song or a few pirouettes in the kitchen…. true Disney form.
Princess & the Frog may not attract an Academy Award (think: Beauty & the Beast), but it’s definitely a masterpiece in its own right. Disney does cheesy love the right way, again.
Welcome to the Magic Kingdom, Princess Tiana. Your arrival was long overdue.
